Pressurized two-product DM cyclones are high efficiency equipment for separation of raw coals in coal preparation industry. They’re specially designed by Birtley to minimize the vortex and abrasion and have features such as high top limit, excellent separation efficiency and great handling capacity.

● Design of Feed Inlet
Front portion of the feed inlet of Birtley cyclones is a round to square transition which accelerates incoming feed, thus allowing the cyclone to handle high feed rates.
It also results in a longer wear life thanks to the mechanically and chemically bounded ceramic liners onto the inlet.

● Feeding
Involute feed inlet is used on Birtley dense medium cyclones. A great deal of simulation and data analysis shows that involute feed can reduce turbulence generated by abrupt diffusion of the feed at the inlet to allow of smooth and stable flow inside the cyclones for better separation performance.

● Conical Section and Apex
Conical Section and Apex, Conical section and apex of the Birtley cyclone are lined with 0.7" (18 mm) thick silicon carbide ceramics to get an excellent wear life.

A cyclone mainly operates on the principle of centrifugal sedimentation. A swirling flow can be established in a cyclone, as a result of tangential feeding. The pressure gradient force provides a driving force in the radial direction to cause heavy, high ash particles to move towards the wall where, dragged by the medium fluid, they flow downward to the pigot, and light, clean coal particles to move towards the centre where, dragged by the medium fluid and air, they flow upward to the vortex finder.
