Classifying hydrocylones are commonly used for achieving particle size separations in coal prep and mineral processing plants.

• The feed inlet consists of a round to square transition bolted to an involutes structure, which helps increase processing capacity, extend the wear life and offer better separation performance.

• All high wear locations of the hydrocyclone is lined with premium ceramics to greatly increase the cyclone's wear life.

• The Birtley hydrocyclone is comprised of different sections that can be easily bolted together or dissembled. The modular structure results in ease of maintenance.

• Apex made of polyurethane lined with alumina ceramics offers an ideal option for high wear applications.

A cyclone mainly operates on the principle of centrifugal sedimentation. A swirling flow can be established in a cyclone, as a result of tangential feeding. The pressure gradient force provides a driving force in the radial direction to cause heavy, high ash particles to move towards the wall where, dragged by the medium fluid, they flow downward to the pigot, and light, clean coal particles to move towards the centre where, dragged by the medium fluid and air, they flow upward to the vortex finder.
